Butter cream is the ideal choice for icing and if you like royal icing, you can go for it too but butter cream is recommendable for people. There are other forms of icing too but these two will work well and even if they are loose adding sugar powder will stiffen them.
- If you want to have different colors in your cake, pick them and divide the icing into batches depending upon the number of colors you want.
- Mix each batch of ice cream with a separate color. The color gets deepened with butter cream and in royal icing, the color will start to fade as the time goes by.
- You can add white icing on the cake and then decorate it with other colors too. Just a simple paint brush and edible colors will do the work here. The way you want your cake to look completely depends on you and you have so many options available.
- Now apply a thin crumb coat on the cake and then add a lump sum of cream to it. Spread large amount of icing on the cake and tops and sides. Spread it with a flat spatula and make sure to not scrape the cake. Try to apply it as smooth as possible.
- You can use a pastry scraper to remove the extra icing. For color icing, it is better to apply less amount of icing.
Now the real cake design will start. There are icing bags available in the market. You can get either disposable ones or plastic ones and also buy some tips with different kinds of design. Pour a hand full of icing into these bags and push the icing to the bottom of the pan. You can choose the type of tip you want and as you keep pressing on the top, the cream will come out of the pipe making the design. When you are done with design, stop squeezing and lift the pastry bag up slowly. Make sure to not press it again.
You can buy or make this fondant at home. Apply a layer of butter cream on the cake and then cover it with a fondant. You can mix it with different types of colors and make various designs with the fondant. You can either use a flat tool or your hand to set the fondant on cake. Now you can cut this into different shapes and decorate your cake with it.
